Commercial Geothermal Incentives

Federal Income Tax Credit:

  • 10% of total system cost
  • No limit to total credit amount
  • Can be used to offset AMT tax
  • Can be used in more than one year
  • 10% grant available in lieu of tax credit
  • Can be combined with solar and wind tax credits
  • Can be combined with energy-efficient building deduction

Accelerated Depreciation

  • 5 year MACR depreciation on entire system
  • Eligible for 50% first-year bonus depreciation for 2008-2009

Eligibility:

  • Building located in U.S.
  • Original use begins with taxpayer
  • Installed between 10/3/2008 and 12/31/2016

Eligible Renewable/Other Technologies: Passive Solar Space Heat, Solar Water Heat, Photovoltaics, Landfill Gas, Wind, Biomass, Geothermal Electric, Daylighting, Anaerobic Digestion, Small Hydroelectric
Applicable Sectors: Commercial, Industrial, Multi-Family Residential
Amount: LEED Silver: 25% reduction of the property tax payable each year
LEED Gold: 30% reduction of the property tax payable each year
LEED Platinum: 35% reduction of the property tax payable each year
Terms: Buildings must earn either Silver, Gold or Platinum certification under the LEED Green Building Rating System
Abatement can last for no more than 10 years.

Eligible Efficiency Technologies: Heat pumps, Air conditioners, Duct/Air sealing
Applicable Sectors: Residential
Amount: Heat Pumps/AC Units: $175 - $525, depending on SEER
Duct Test: .75 X cost of test
Duct Repairs: .75 X cost of repairs
Maximum Incentive: Maximum of 5 Heat Pumps/AC units per household
Duct Test: $75
Duct Repairs: $175
Equipment Requirements: Heat Pumps/AC Units: 10.8 EER; SEER requirements vary (minimum 13)
Installation Requirements: For the APS AC Rebate, units must be installed by an APS qualified contractor.
For the Duct Test and Repair Rebate, tests and repairs must be done by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Contractor.
